Following the success of the Benilde dance-musical “Ding, ang Bato!” based on Mars Ravelo’s “Darna”, the IPMC gathered the creative team behind the production last 24 May 2018 at The Loop of the SDA Campus for a conversation, to talk about their role in the production and their creative process as artists.

“Ding, ang Bato!” was a major production of the Benilde Arts and Culture Cluster (BACC) of the School of Design and Arts for school year 2017-2018. The BACC invited CCP Director Chris Millado as playrwright and stage director, and EJ Yatco and Jef Flores as Composer/Musical Directors. “Ding, ang Bato!” is a unique storytelling of the renowned Mars Ravelo fictional superhero character, “Darna”, told in the point of view of “Ding”, Narda’s brother who is portrayed as a Deaf character in the production.  The show was a collaboration of the BACC programs’ faculty and students – Theater Arts and Production Design, Music Production, Dance, and Arts Management.

The IP talk, entitled “Extraordinary Women in Extraordinary Industries” featured the BACC faculty and the creative technical team behind the production, namely, Mr. Armando “Tuxqs” Rutaquio, Mr. Joaquin Jose “Jay” Aranda, Ms. Joyce Elaine “Joee” Mejias, and Mr. Glen Alarcon.

Sir Tuxqs, the Production Designer of the show was in-charge of stage design and costume designs. He brought with him the final illustrations of the costumes and the actual costumes of Darna and Valentina, as he shared how they were developed. The designs were executed by his senior students from the Production Design program.

Ms. Joee Mejias, an MMA alumni of Benilde, is multimedia artist, independent musician, and projection designer. In “Ding, ang Bato!”, she was mainly in-charge of projecting the shadow plays designed by Sigmund Pecho and collaborated with lighting designer and technical director Jay Aranda. She shared her story on how she started her career in music and projection design, and the gigs she has done locally and abroad.

Sir Jay Aranda is a long-time SDA faculty and has been the technical director and lighting designer for most of Benilde’s stage productions. In “Ding, ang Bato!”, Sir Jay explained the importance and the process of designing a unique lighting that will suit each scene. Glen Alarcon, alumni and assistant technical director to Mr. Aranda in “Ding, ang Bato!”, also shared his experiences during the production.

Other members of the production team included Ms. Aji Manalo, faculty and program chairperson of Music Production as Sound Designer, and Ms. Denisa Reyes and Mr. Ernest Mandap of the Dance Program as choreographers.

The Benilde production “Ding, ang Bato!” based on Mars Ravelo’s “Darna”  was produced under a creative license from ABS-CBN Corporation and Mars Ravelo Komiiks Characters, Inc. The IPMC managed the execution of the license agreement on behalf of the College of Saint Benilde.
